Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division - ALBUM REVIEW

Unknown Pleasures Joy Division LP sleeve.jpg

Ah, Joy Division. One of those bands I think I have more respect for than outright like. I respect what they did for gothic rock in the 80s, but as far as the music on this album goes... it's good.

This is purely personal preference, as really all of my reviews boil down to. If you can find a reason to like Justin Bieber's Changes, more power to you. And I wouldn't say that there's a bad song on this album, or even any that are mediocre. It's a solid album. I just can't help but expect more sonically when it comes to these groundbreaking groups. There's something that feels oddly flat about this album to me, that i'm sure fans of this band would deride me for saying. But I think about bands like The Cure and how they were able to create much more interesting music with what they did. Or at least it was more fun, I had more of an experience listening to it. This, while technically great, doesn't exactly have that "wow" factor for me to come back to it time and time again. Still good, though.

Top Ten Wednesday - Billboard Hot 100 Review: March 28, 2020

Hi everyone! Gonna start doing these on Wednesday for the foreseeable future to give myself more time to process the Top 10. Not as catchy a title, but I'm sure you'll be fine with it. Anyway, our Top 10!

"Blinding Lights" hits another peak as it surges to #2. "The Box" still has its hold on #1, but probably not for much longer. The dropouts of the Lil Uzi Vert songs allow "Someone You Loved" and "everything i wanted" to return to the Top 10, with "Adore You" entering for the first time! Not the worst outcome, I suppose, though Lewis Capaldi needs to go awaaaaaay.

Predictions:

"Blinding Lights" is definitely coming for that #1 next week. I don't see anything being able to reasonably stop it. I could see "Say So" making a play for the Top 10 next week as well, hopefully knocking off Lewis Capaldi? Please? We can't discount other Weeknd songs from making the Top 10, either.

Top Ten Tuesday/Wednesday - Billboard Hot 100 Review: March 21, 2020

Hey guys! Sorry for the late edition of Top Ten Tuesday. You can appreciate things have been pretty hectic, I'm sure. But in this particular instance, the show must go on!

Lots of movement again this week as Lil Uzi Vert smashes through with his new album bomb and scores three Top 10 hits. This pushes "Dance Monkey", "Memories", and "Stupid Love" off the Top 10, though the latter I'd argue didn't really need the help as it crashes down to #30. Inexplicably, that Justin Bieber nothing of a song remains in the Top 10 despite all this. I don't normally advocate for more Lil Uzi Vert in the Top 10, but in this case it might be an upgrade.

More exciting are some of the gains made this week, with "Don't Start Now" climbing to #2 and "Blinding Lights" right behind at #4. "The Box" holds at #1, though we'll see for how much longer. On that note...

Predictions:

As far as I can tell, it's a three-horse race between "Blinding Lights", "Don't Start Now", and "The Box" for that #1 spot. I'll put my bet on "Blinding Lights"; it's got streaming momentum and it's very radio-friendly. I cannot believe that those Lil Uzi Vert songs will survive another week in the Top 10, prompting a return for "Dance Monkey", "Memories" (sigh) and... "Someone You Loved"? God, let's hope not.

Changes by Justin Bieber - ALBUM REVIEW

Justin Bieber - Changes.png

...What can you even say about an album that itself has nothing to say?

Justin Bieber's Changes is one of the most excruciating listens I've ever had for an album. Not because it's even noteworthy in its badness, but because it is such a slog. Every song sounds the exact same. I remember when "Yummy" came out as the first single and it got me super worried for the rest of this album. Not that I had high expectations for a Justin Bieber album anyway, but surely he could do better than "Yummy."

...

"Yummy" is the best song on the album.

At the very least, "Yummy" has a sort of personality and hook, which is more than I can say for any of these other godawful songs. It is astounding to me that not a single song here rises above mediocre. Justin Bieber can't even be bothered to put in that much effort. Or at least that's how it seems. Because given the guest stars on this album, you'd think Justin Bieber was giving his 110% to get them on here.

I have no idea why anyone signed on to this. No indication is given that any of the guest stars are having any fun. And why should they? Justin Bieber has always been a black hole of charisma, but here it seems like he's just given up. The only thing of any note here is the presence of some of these awkward lyrics. Particularly in "Intentions", where he brags that his girl has a "heart full of equity" and is "an asset". Is she a girl or a checking account? Yet you'd hardly even notice these weird lyrics with the blasé, detached way he presents them. I'm not kidding when I say that every song here sounds exactly the goddamn same. It's a nearly 1-hour drone, with the only hook being "yeah you got that yummy yum that yummy yum". I don't even like it, but at least it sticks in my head!

This is the worst album I've reviewed to date, in case you couldn't tell. It's ugly, pointless, boring, and should be the nail in the coffin of Justin Bieber's waning career with diminishing returns. Even so, he can do better than this.

3/10

Best Tracks: "Yummy", which as I said is barely mediocre, and certainly not worth a Summer Walker remix. Ugh.

Top Ten Tuesday - Billboard Hot 100 Review: March 14, 2020

MOVEMENT!

Finally, the slightest bit of movement in the Top 10. It felt like especially the Top 3 was staying stagnant forever. But now we have a new Top-3 entry with Dua Lipa, and I couldn't be happier that she's gaining that second wind after her first breakthrough.

Elsewhere in the Top 10, we have Lady Gaga's Top 5 debut with "Stupid Love". I don't imagine this will stick around in the Top 10, but I expect a radio push for this classically radio-friendly song to keep it above water. Beyond that, no real big changes other than "ON" expectedly falling off and "Someone You Loved" switching places with "Intentions". Not exactly a big fan of either of those songs, but it's definitely time for "Someone You Loved" to go (and "Memories" to follow suit).

Predictions:

As "Say So" surges in all categories, I'd expect it to make its Top 10 debut sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, I also expect "Intentions" to stick around, despite having no real reason to other than name recognition. Whatever replaces it, I hope next week will be the week that "Memories" finally falls out. Please?

Wumbo's Top 10 Hits of 2009

2009 was a year of club shit. But club shit doesn't always have to be bad! There can be good club shit as well. Just follow me on this. In addition to good party songs, there were also surprises from this year that I had forgotten about. 2009 seems like such a long time ago, because it was. Deal with it. We're in 2020 now and time will keep on marching on whether we like it or not. But in the interest of keeping things light, I'm going to opt not to continue the macabre nature of existential discussion and instead discuss fun club shit. Let's go!

---

We've been in such a rock-anemic period of pop music for quite some time now. It's hard to even remember a time when rock music was just as alive and well as pop or rap. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as genre popularities ebb and flow and we may see a rock resurgence in the future. But it does make these sorts of hits look all the more anomalous.

10. "Use Somebody" - Kings of Leon

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnhXHvRoUd0

"Use Somebody" feels anthemic in a way that most rock songs don't anymore. I think the last truly anthemic band we got like this to hit the mainstream was fun., and they were decidedly more indie than Kings of Leon, who act as classic rock stars. This feels like a song that could have played well in any decade. It's a slice of timeless rock that you just don't get anymore. Nowadays, the closest thing we get to "rock" on the charts is rock-adjacent pop like Brendon Urie's Panic! At The Disco or *shudder* Maroon 5. So it's good to go back to 2009, a year when rock felt a lot more accessible and fun. This is a song that will keep playing in my head for years to come.

---

And speaking of anthemic songs of 2009...

9. "I Gotta Feeling" - The Black Eyed Peas

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSD4vsh1zDA

Say what you will about The Black Eyed Peas. I certainly have, check out my recent blog post. But there's no denying the ability they had in the 2000s to make relentlessly catchy, earwormy songs. And if those songs make you feel like you're at a party where everyone's party, that's a bonus. "I Gotta Feeling" evokes exactly that feeling. It's a party song for everyone. You could sing that chorus about anything and it would pump you up. You could be in for an evening of washing dishes and that song would get you pumped to wash those dishes. It's a feel-good anthem, and quite possibly the last excellent Black Eyed Peas song. If only they could keep up this momentum instead of disappearing up their own asses.

8. "Live Your Life" - T.I. ft. Rihanna

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koVHN6eO4Xg

If you had told me that a song interpolating the Numa Numa song would not only smash the Billboard charts, but also be an actual good song, I would have called you nuts. Yet, even eleven years later, here we still are. Part of why this song works so well is just how talented and charismatic Rihanna is. Rihanna's monster decade would still be to come at this point, but with this song she proves that she can hold her own on guest verses as well as her own songs. She turns in a mesmerizing yet effortless performance here. Stunning.

The other part of this song that works is very similar to how "I Gotta Feeling" works: it's an uplifting song for basically everyone, with a particularly earwormy and applicable chorus. Sure, it also works to massage the egos of T.I. and Rihanna alike, but what pop song in 2009 didn't do that? This came out during a recession, but it also came out at a time when pop music felt particularly affluent. "Live Your Life" always puts me in a good mood, and I hope sharing this song with you does the same.

---

I was never really sure what to make of this one. All I know is that it hooked me from the first time I heard it.

7. "Let It Rock" - Kevin Rudolf ft. Lil Wayne

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0n4eMGXAyk

Who is Kevin Rudolf, exactly? Where on earth did he come from? And why am I asking similar questions about him that I did about Jay Sean, yet this song ended up on my best list and "Down" on my worst? Heck, both songs even feature Lil Wayne. The parallels are unavoidable. And yet... this song is so much obviously better than "Down" it's not even funny.

Kevin Rudolf is just as much a nobody as Jay Sean is, but he doesn't present himself as one in his music. If you were an alien visiting planet Earth and trying to understand popular music, you'd think this guy was one of the biggest stars in the world. And the SONG was certainly everywhere, but it never made Kevin Rudolf a household name or anything. The song seems to have superseded the "star", rather than wallowing in its anonymity like "Down". And to be fair, you have to give Kevin Rudolf credit for that. He really sells that rock star swagger, making this a surprisingly more credible rock song than "Use Somebody". Yes, even with Lil Wayne on the track. Miracles do happen.

All I know is that it was a joy to come back and re-listen to this song again to write this post. I don't think Kevin Rudolf will be making a comeback anytime soon, but at least he gave us this. So let it rock!

6. "Waking Up in Vegas" - Katy Perry

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-pUaogoX5o

This is the best Katy Perry song. No substitutions, no exceptions. This is the only Katy Perry song I loved from the first time I heard it, probably because it's the most pop-rock of her singles. This wouldn't sound too out of the ordinary from Avril Lavigne, for example. What can I say? It just works for me, the way most Katy Perry songs don't. There's an energy to this one that doesn't usually show up with Katy Perry. It's the most fun of her songs, by far. It doesn't sound quite as artificial as something like "California Gurls". Yeah, yeah, I know, it's basically a rock bias with this one. But Penn and Teller are also in this video! How can you not love it?

Look, this is likely the only time you'll see me singing Katy Perry's praises on this blog, so take it or leave it.

Seems kind of pointless to talk about Kanye West at this point. I know there's the argument for "death of the author", but even without taking into account all the shitty things he's said and done, his output the past few years has been mostly dogshit. almost enough to make you forget that, at one point, he was the biggest rapper in the world.

5. "Heartless" - Kanye West

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Co0tTeuUVhU

Kanye at one point was a musical genius, but I think he's sputtered out of both fuel and goodwill at this point. Which is a damn shame, because through the 2000s he was on fire. This is from his album 808s & Heartbreak, one that wound up a bit more polarizing than his previous efforts. But I'd argue this song makes the whole album worth it on its own. It's a mesmerizing track that swerves from anger to sadness to regret. A track that definitely doesn't live up to its name, as there is clearly a lot of heart and soul put into it.

---

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qL02p9KhABo

When people think of rock bands from the 2000s, they typically think of Fall Out Boy or Green Day, the mega-stars. I'd like to make a case to remember these guys a little better.

4. "Gives You Hell" - The All-American Rejects

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxUATkpMQ8A

I'm not really sure why The All-American Rejects didn't get their dues the way aforementioned bands above did. They certainly had the chops and the capability to make catchy songs. This song wound up being their most successful to date, peaking at #4 on the Hot 100 and becoming 4x Platinum. And while I love all of the All-American Rejects' stuff, this is definitely the choice that makes the most sense in terms of crossover appeal. It's the most fun, if brainless, of their songs. And it's got a big crowd chant to kick off the third chorus. The All-American Rejects have flirted with notoriety before this point, but here they struck gold. And hell, I'm not too good for silly songs like this, especially when they're presented in such a fun, crowd-pleasing way. I love The All- American Rejects, and it's good to see them not being rejected from the Hot 100.

---

When the question is Katy Perry vs. Lady Gaga, it's Gaga all the way. Not even a contest.

3. "Poker Face" - Lady Gaga

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bESGLojNYSo

When Lady Gaga took the pop world by storm in 2009, it felt like we finally had a new pop superstar to replace the Britneys and Aguileras of the early part of the decade. One which would influence the sound of pop music for years to come. And "Poker Face" is the smash hit that we absolutely needed this year to bring pop back. Prior to this, the landscape had mostly been rock, rap, and R&B. Nothing wrong with the three R's, of course, but something still felt missing. Lady Gaga came in to fill that void. "Poker Face" is one of those boringly perfect pop songs that there's really nothing to say about at this point. It's just goofy enough to be catchy, and Lady Gaga's monstrous personality does a lot to propel this song to star quality. She would get even better as the years went on, but "Poker Face" is absolutely a highlight in her discography.

---

2. "Day 'n' Nite" - Kid Cudi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrDfSZ_6f4U

This song feels like the turning point for a lot of popular hip hop in the 2000s. Not that every song needs to be spiritual lyrical miracle, but by 07/08 it was getting pretty ridiculous. And Kanye cannot carry the torch on his own. So it's nice to see a song like this about mental illness and drug use that takes a more thoughtful and musically subtle approach. I appreciate this song greatly for being around in 2009.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7UrFYvl5TE

I remember buying Kelly Clarkson's album when it came out and all the singles were huge. Listening to that album still brings me back to my childhood, and thus I've always had a soft spot for her music, even when it's not at its greatest. Her comeback at the end of the decade was something to behold, like an old friend coming back to say hi. Hi, Kelly.

1. "My Life Would Suck Without You" - Kelly Clarkson

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRM70Jw7F4M

Basically, this song lives on Kelly Clarkson's vocals. She is a powerful singer that is a towering presence when she's giving it her all. And I definitely hear it in this performance. Not everyone can take a chorus like "My life would suck without you" and make it credible. But Kelly Clarkson does just that. I believe every word of this song because she sings so earnestly. I know American Idol is pretty much a sham, but even they get it right sometimes. Kelly Clarkson is a great example of that.

Romance by Camila Cabello - ALBUM REVIEW

Romance (Official Album Cover) by Camila Cabello.png

When you're the least talented member of your unimpressive girl group and yet you're the first breakout star, it's an interesting legacy you lead as Camila Cabello. Upon the release of her second solo album Romance, Camila has enjoyed an impressive run of pop hits. I think one of them was even good!

Yeah, in case you're still figuring it out, I am not a Camila Cabello fan. Even less so after the fact that she's been exposed as racist towards her bandmates, particularly Normani. But that doesn't mean she doesn't deserve her day in court! In fact, she'll have to work extra hard to prove her worth as a pop star that can stay around with this album. And folks... I'm not hearing it.

Camila Cabello is simply an unimpressive artist. That's pretty much all you can say. She comes in with an album full of half-baked, malformed ideas that barely evolve into actual songs, let alone good ones. "My Oh My" is one of the most excruciating listens on the album. Camila Cabello still sounds like a little girl trying on mom's clothes playing dress-up, not any sort of adult, making DaBaby's unfortunate appearance all the more jarring. Even he can't make this non-starter of a track any fun.

There are a few bright spots. I think "Shameless", as ear-rending as it can be, at least has a drive to be an actual pop song. "This Love" is the only ballad that halfway works. But oh God, most of this album is just a chore to get through. It sounds like Camila isn't even finished teething, the way she yelps her way through most of these songs. She either sounds completely uninterested or completely unlistenable. There's rarely a middle ground.

And I guess we gotta talk about "Senorita", the big breakthrough hit on this album. I feel that pretty much everything that can be said about it has already been said, every joke has been made, and every share of that sloppy Shawn Mendes/Camila Cabello kiss has been shared. But I just want to reiterate that this song is crushingly dull, with no momentum and barely any flavour to give it reason for existing. Blech.

I set my expectations low, and very rarely were they exceeded. Camila Cabello may have a career ahead of her yet; pop music does tend to make mediocrity rise to the top. But I do hope she actually gets a personality and grows up a bit. It would make her music a lot more bearable.

Fine Line by Harry Styles - ALBUM REVIEW

Harry Styles - Fine Line.png

Happy International Women's Day, everyone! I'm going to review an album made by a man. Maybe not the best timing, but it was next on my radar, and I haven't put out a review in a while, and it's still preferable to Camila Cabello, which is next. So let's get started.

Fine Line is an album which I would best describe as "soft". It's a soft, gentle listen for if you want something to play to make you feel warm and fuzzy. Harry Styles doesn't really make any bold statements or grandiose gestures in this album. But that's exactly how it functions: a fine listen for when you don't want something too challenging.

I feel like I'm being harsher to this album than I intend, so let me make clear that I do like this album. I'm just not sure I'd consider it among my very favourites, and given the hype I've heard for this album, I was somehow expecting more. As is, it's serviceable, even great in parts. But I do wish that Harry Styles would spread his wings creatively, because if this is a throwback of any kind, it's to tame, safe Michael McDonald-like pop from the 80s. Which, I don't mind Michael McDonald, so that's not a pejorative. I was just expecting more, but I was still very happy with what I got. Harry Styles clearly has talent, and I'm sure he has the potential to come out with an album that will really knock me off my seat. Just saying, not sure anything here is better than "Sign of the Times", so he has the potential. He just has to harness it. But this is good for now.

Top Ten Tuesday - Billboard Hot 100 Review: March 7, 2020

A fair bit of action on the Hot 100 this week, most notably album bombs from BTS (!) and NBA YoungBoy. Not much of it affected the Top 10, except for BTS' monstrous debut with "ON" reaching number 4, their highest debut and charting hit on the Hot 100 to date! However, much of the Top 10 remained the same, especially the Top 3 which has been stagnant for three weeks now. I like "The Box", but it's no "Old Town Road". Might be time for some fresh blood.

Speaking of which, the activity in the Top 10 seems to be concentrated toward the bottom half, where "Blinding Lights" continues to surge up to #8. I'm really hoping for this song to make the surge to #1, but I'll settle for a Top 5 hit. In any case, it's making a serious run for that year-end list. This knocks mainstays on the Top 10 "Memories" and "Someone You Loved" down to 9 and 10 respectively, hopefully falling out of the Top 10 next week, two songs that have stuck around for FAR too long.

Only other note of interest is "Dance Monkey"'s collapse to #7, which I found surprising. I honestly thought the song had more momentum going for it, but it appears to be floundering a lot sooner than expected, which is a bit of a shame as it grew on me.

Predictions:

"Blinding Lights" will continue its surge, especially after "ON" falls out. I'm looking at a Top 5 hit next week. Looking further down the charts, Doja Cat's "Say So" has been gaining insane momentum off of streaming. It could very well break the Top 10 soon if it keeps that up. I expect, and hope, "Memories" and "Someone You Loved" to fall out of the Top 10 next week.

Monday, March 2, 2020

So... where have I been this time?

Part procrastination, part insanely busy schedule.

We're gonna try a more relaxed schedule from here on out. Album/song reviews when I want to do them, plus a Top 10 Tuesday. Let's see if that actually works.
